Much research has been conducted to better understand the relationship between race, income, and mortality. Race is a strong predictor of mortality rates. In the US, African American infant mortality rates are consistently higher than white infant mortality rates. Income inequality has also been associated with higher mortality rates. Research exploring the relationship between income inequality and mortality has noted an interaction between income inequality and racial composition. I test whether such an interaction exists for infant mortality. Using data from the National Center for Health Statistics and the US Census, I assess whether income inequality has less effect on infant mortality rates in US counties with a high percentage of African Americans than in counties with a low percentage of African Americans. Results indicate that the interaction found for overall mortality is not found when examining county level data using infant mortality rates.
