This thesis explores the relationships between income inequality, economic vulnerability and anti-immigration attitudes. Previous studies indicate that economically threatening environments foster anti-immigration sentiments, while they neglect to investigate impacts of income inequality on attitudes towards immigrants. As income inequality dampens economic growth and fuels economic instability, I argue that it increases hostility towards immigrants. Moreover, I expect income inequality to moderate the effect of economic vulnerability on anti-immigration attitudes as lower social mobility and fear of economic downgrading increase with higher levels of income inequality. Using data from five rounds of the European Social Survey (2008-2016), I test the hypotheses with a multi-level approach in order to explore cross-level interactions. The results suggest that income inequality does not seem to significantly affect the level of hostility towards immigrants. However, the cross-level interaction of economic vulnerability and income inequality seems to have a significant effect on the formation of anti-immigration attitudes in Western European countries.
